After forming in 2005, A Plea for Purging performed over 200 live shows in their first year together. They released the "A Plea for Purging EP" in 2006, then the "Quick Is the Word, Steady Is the Action EP" the following year. In late 2007, A Plea for Purging signed to Facedown Records and released their debut LP A Critique of Mind and Thought, which featured a few re-recorded songs from both EPs, as well as new songs, and guest vocals from Phil Bozeman of Whitechapel on the song "The Betrayers". In 2008, rhythm guitarist Lyle Paschal decided to leave and was replaced by Tyler Wilson, a friend of the band. In 2009 the band recorded Depravity, which was released on Facedown Records. The album was produced by Joey Sturgis at the Rise Records-owned Foundation Studios in Connersville, Indiana. The album received mixed reviews from fans and critics, being recognized as a step up from their debut release, but also said to be lacking in originality and body. In 2010 the band announced that they would take some time off touring to start writing their next album. The album was revealed to be a concept album, entitled The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. It was released on July 16, 2010 on Facedown Records. The album was produced by Joey Sturgis at Foundation Studios in Connersvile, Indiana, and was mixed by Brian Hood, formerly of MyChildren MyBride. Late that year, Plea announced that rhythm guitarist Tyler Wilson had decided to leave the band. The band decided not to replace him, and have remained a four-piece. In February-March 2011, the band toured with MyChildren MyBride and The Chariot in support of Haste the Day for their farewell tour. In mid 2011, Plea announced they had re-signed with Facedown Records, and were working on new material for their upcoming album. Later it was announced that they were heading into the studio in August with producer Josh Schroeder to record their fourth full-length. The band released a series of studio updates on Youtube, one of which confirmed that The Life & Death of A Plea for Purging would be the title. The album was released on November 8, 2011. Although the album is not officially a concept album, it does deal with a variety of topics such as faith, growing older, the exhausted lifestyle behind touring, feeling homesick, and the recent death of vocalist Andy Atkins' parents, among other life struggles. The band is currently on tour in support of the new album with Take It Back!, No Bragging Rights and Gideon.
